Las Vegas (sight seeing day 1)

Day 9 – Las Vegas

Las Vegas

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

Spent the day wandering up and down the Las Vegas strip … It’s fantastic here, everything is so large and opulent!

We started out at the MGM Grand – love their $9m lion habitat! Also visited the Eiffel Tower and New York New York … which is the closest we’ll get to New York now that we’ve had to change our travel plans to avoid New York (after learning that we couldn’t take the guns there without a special permit that is near impossible to obtain!). Oh well, I can think of worse places than Las Vegas to spend an extra few days!!

Watched the Bellagio water show (which we missed last time we were here because it was too windy) – absolutely stunning, and then turned around to see about 50 exotic and muscle cars being escorted by police down the main strip – Dave’s favorite was the $2m Bugati Veyron!!

USPSA – Competition Days 3 & 4

Day 7 – USPSA – Competition Day 3

Las Vegas

Monday, 19 September 2011

Completed 5 stages today … I had a silly miss on the first stage of the day, but other than that we both shot ok.

Shooting on the old style (bigger) targets has actually been a bit harder than we thought … we’ve both shot a lot more C’s and D’s on these targets than normal. (I was getting 2 per stage instead of my usual 1!!). Probably because there is so much shoot area, it’s easy to get excited and just blast a couple of shots in the general direction!

Got back to the hotel for another fab swim in the ultra pool … Will post some photos of this amazing place eventually.

Just one stage and chrono to go tomorrow….

Day 8 – USPSA – Competition Day 4 & Awards

Las Vegas

Tuesday, 20 September 2011

The competition is over (can’t believe we had to go to the range today for just one stage of 14 rounds!!), and results are now final. Dave finished 17th outright, and I finished 9th in the Women’s category. Both one place off the results we were hoping for, but, given the lead up we’ve had it could have been a lot worse, so we shouldn’t complain.

The stages were good fun, the guys in our squad (Squad 31) were really friendly, and overall it has been great practice for the World Shoot in Greece!

As we’d finished at the range by 9.30am this morning, we took a short drive up the road to visit ‘Red Rock Canyon’ – it was absolutely stunning, the photos don’t really do it justice.

Tonight we had the awards ceremony at the match hotel, where Dave was awarded 1st Place International – well done Dave!

USPSA – Competition Day 2

Day 6 – USPSA – Competition Day 2

Las Vegas

Sunday, 18 September 2011

Day 2 done and dusted! Dave was a bit unlucky on a couple of stages, but on the whole we both shot ok and didn’t have any penalties (I did however shoot 4 D’s on my last stage, so may as well have had a miss!!).

Had another great swim in the ‘Ultra Pool’ at the MGM Grand … It took us 10 minutes to float from our banana lounge a full lap around the outdoor area in the ‘whirl pool’. Heaven!!

USPSA – Competition Day 1

Day 5 – USPSA – Day 1

Las Vegas

Saturday, 17 September 2011

Today we shot 8 of the 20 stages, we each had one miss for the day and shot a bit slow/untidy, but ok considering all. Heat wasn’t as bad as we were expecting, I think it was 32 Celsius … But it did feel hotter at the range. They had a water truck to keep the road dust down, but I don’t think it helped very much – the dust did not agree with my current chest infection, but what can you do?

We have 6 stages tomorrow, 5 on Monday and 1 on Tuesday. Let’s hope we can pick up our socks a bit!!

A hopeful attempt to reduce the dust

Day 3 – Las Vegas

Las Vegas

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Just about to head out the door and start seeing the sights … and Dave pinches a nerve in his back. A handful of pain killers and an hour of rest later we were off to see Hoover Dam and the first of many visits to the local gunshops. We also discovered that Las Vegas has a marina!! (yes, seriously – a very big marina, also known as Lake Mead).

Day 4 – USPSA – Registrations

Las Vegas

Friday, 16 September 2011

Visited a few more gun shops this morning (all starting to look the same to me!). Then headed to ‘The Riviera Hotel and Casino’ at 1pm to register for the match. We stood in line for about an hour (funny how no matter where in the world you go, registrations never start at the advertised time) to get our info packs and t-shirts.

We then headed out to the range, the ‘Desert Sportsmen’s Rifle and Pistol Club’ (no joke about the desert bit … It’s a very large dustbowl with minimal facilities). We were hoping to chrono and function fire our guns, but no one seemed to know if/where we could. Thankfully, the indoor range ‘American Shooters’ is one of the match sponsors and free passes were provided in the info pack for each competitor, so we headed there for a quick test / sight-in. Always nice to know the guns survived the flight ok!!

While at the range we did have a quick look at some of the stages (was quite a shock we were actually allowed to walk-thru the stages before the match … I kept looking over my shoulder waiting for an official to yell at me!). Average target distance is about 5 meters!!! We’ll be shooting 8 of the 20 stages tomorrow afternoon (2+2+2 shot hot) and I only spotted 4 targets that I’ll actually need to aim at – should be a fun day!

Day 1 – Travel Day (Melbourne – LA – Las Vegas)

Las Vegas

Tuesday, 13 September 2011

After a 2hr delay leaving Melbourne, we were finally on our way to LA (14 hr flight). Had no trouble clearing customs with the guns – did not even have to show them or any paperwork! Had a short wait at LAX (long enough to pay $28 for 2 sandwiches and a bottle of mineral water!), then a 1hr flight to Las Vegas where we picked up the hire car and Dave had his first experience driving on the wrong side of the road!!

Arrived at the hotel mid afternoon and it is fantastic (thanks Joe!). We’re on the 29th floor of the MGM Grand Signature in a huge apartment (it has 2 bathrooms and 3 TV’s!!) with a balcony overlooking the Strip.

Had a quick dinner in the food court downstairs then headed to bed to catch up on much needed sleep after being awake for almost 24hrs straight.

Day 2 – Las Vegas

Las Vegas

Wednesday, 14 September 2011

Had a great sleep in (till midday!!), then headed out for some shopping at the Premium Outlets. The place is huge and some items so much cheaper than at home (I bought a couple of Nike dri-fit polo shirts for $20 each!!).

Drove around for a bit like complete tourists (occasionally on the wrong side of the road) looking for a supermarket and eventually found a Walmart. Stocked up on supplies then headed back to the hotel.

Dave cooked steak and veg for tea – yummy!

The plan for tomorrow is Hoover Dam, couple of gun shops and a visit to the TV show shop, ‘Pawn Stars’. Might need to get up earlier than midday…!
